Do you smell ammonia? That's normal!

Our Cod Fish Chips come from Iceland and are processed the same day they are caught - we never use any type of preservative and the process is natural in that we air-dry everything.  By air drying we naturally preserve the fish meat and skin - keeping it full of flavor and nutrition. The Cod Mince or Chips are just the little pieces of cod that come off the fish when filleted.  That mince is then formed into the chip or patty that you see today.  What you are smelling is the natural scent of ammonia that comes off of any ground fish - that's not cooked but naturally preserved.  It's completely harmless and will dissipate as it remains open to oxygen.  Please rest assured that what you are experiencing is normal and shows that we take strides to follow the best process for making our treats.  The treats and fish in Iceland are considered a delicacy and the ammonia smell is part of their culture.  We agree with you that the initial smell can be a bit shocking and will vary from bag to bag - but it's very much a normal part of the experience, albeit an interesting one.
